Historical Workshops at Eastfield Village:
A Peek Into the Parlor 1780-1860
August 2-4, 2010
Eastfield Village
Nassau, NY

An historical look at where Americans spent their social time, covering architecture, lighting, decorating, heating, eating, furishings, and drapery from 1780 to 1860. Seminars at Eastfield are a summer tradition, and if you've never been to one, you owe it to yourself to sign up! They bring together enthusiasts in historic preservation, antiques, early crafts and trades, museum professionals, collectors, dealers--a great variety of people who want to study intensively together for a few days in an incredible setting: a collection of historic buildings and artifacts placed in a village setting where traditional trades are still practiced.
Teaching this workshop are experts on furniture, ceramics, textiles, lighting, decorative arts, fine arts, heating, and architecture.
Rabbit Goody will speak on Textiles as Furnishings in Parlors and Sitting Rooms 1780 to 1860. She will discuss how drapery, carpet, and upholstery create the soft features that help define a room and its uses. As innovation in the textile industry changed, so did the fabrics used to differentiate the parlor and sitting room from bed chambers, sick rooms, and nurseries. This 80 year span saw great changes in the availability of drapery, carpet, and upholstery.
Thistle Hill's Business Manager Jill Maney, together with her husband Jonathan Maney, will speak on All Manner of Fancy Goods: Decorative Arts in Parlors 1780 to 1860.
